About Maya Time

The Cholq'ij is the sacred 260-day count. It combines thirteen numbers with twenty named days, creating a cycle of 260 unique days. In K'iche', the sacred calendar is known as the Chol Q'ij.

The Haab' is the 365-day solar count. It consists of eighteen periods of twenty days, followed by the five-day period known as Wayeb'.

The Long Count records the passage of days through larger units of time: k'in, uinal, tun, katun, and baktun. The system uses groups of twenty, with the important exception that eighteen uinals make one tun, or 360 days.

Maya Time brings these interconnected ways of measuring time together, showing how a Gregorian date corresponds to the Maya calendar system.

This calculator uses the GMT 584,283 correlation. Cholq'ij day names are displayed using K'iche' terminology. The K'iche' name Tijax corresponds to the day sign known in the classical Tzolk'in terminology as Etz'nab'. Different Maya communities and scholarly systems may use different orthographies, correlations, or interpretations of the calendar.
